Rajesh Khanna is no more with us-His Death Facts
Rajesh Khanna passed away Wednesday following prolonged illness. His actor son-in-law Akshay Kumar says he has gone to a "nice and heavenly place".
"I regret to inform everybody my father-in-law Mr. Rajesh Khanna is no more. He has gone to a nice and heavenly place, we are happy about that. I hope everybody who is watching this can just say a small little prayer for him," Akshay told reporters here.
Kaka, as he was popularly known, is survived by wife Dimple Kapadia and daughters Twinkle and Rinke. He was 69.
He had been battling with health issues for a long time, and was admitted to the hospital in the last one month. His funeral will be held 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
The film fraternity, country's political leaders and fans remembered with great fondness the "phenomenon" that he was.
Several celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan, Yash Chopra, Rishi Kapoor, Prem Chopra, Abhishek Bachchan, Anu Malik, Vindu Dara Singh, Sajid Khan, Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora Khan turned up at the actor's Bandra residence Ashirwad.
The news of Rajesh Khanna's death came in just a week after veteran wrestler-actor Dara Singh's demise July 12.
Veteran actor Manoj Kumar told us on phone: "I could not believe that he is no more with us. Earlier it was Dara Singh, now it is Rajesh. I feel god is upset with the industry. Rajesh was a different personality. He made a mark for himself through his hard work."
In an era long before this age of instant connect of mobile phones and internet, Rajesh Khanna was the man who sparked a frenzy never seen before and never since, not even by the likes of Amitabh Bachchan.
His very name spelt magic in the 1970s. He sparked hysteria, particularly amongst his legions of women fans, who would line the road for a glimpse, chant his name, cover his car with lipstick marks and even write him letters in blood. They got married to his photograph, cut their finger, let the blood flow and applied 'sindoor'.
Truly, "O mere di ke chain"!
Kaka, as he was popularly known, was one of the highest paid actors of his time, his record of consecutive solo super hits still unbroken. Who can forget the years between 1970-1979 when he starred in mega hits like "Safar", "Kati Patang", "Sachaa Jhutha", "Aan Milo Sajna", "Anand", "Amar Prem" and "Mere Jeevan Saathi". Ever the urbane, suave romantic who wooed like few others.
Glory and fame galore came his way with the two 1969 films - "Aradhana" and "Do Raaste" - where he teamed up with two of his best co-stars, Sharmila Tagore and Mumtaz, respectively. Both the films were super hits. Hindi film's first superstar was born.
Between "Aradhana" in 1969 and "Prem Kahani" in 1975, Rajesh enjoyed god-like status.
It was all about charisma - a certain something that went beyond the art of acting. He had that unique way of delivering a dialogue, of crinkling his eyes and that interesting head tilt that were all his own - and designed to get fans swooning.
Describing the charm of Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh once said: "I got famous purely because I was working with Rajesh Khanna in 'Anand'. People asked me questions like, 'How is he to look at? What does he do?'"
The mega story had a small beginning in Amritsar. Born Jatin Arora on Dec 29, 1942, he was adopted and raised by foster parents.
He went from being Jatin to Rajesh, thanks to his uncle who changed his name, when he decided to join films.
In 1965, the journey to filmdom started after he won the All India Talent Contest organised by United Producers and Filmfare. He made his debut with "Aakhri Khat" in 1966.
It was a fairly easy road to superstardom after that.
He became the heartthrob of the nation, singing timeless melodies like "Mere Sapnon Ki Rani..." in "Aradhana", "Zindagi Ek Safar" in "Andaaz" or "Yeh Shaam Mastani" in "Kati Patang". Singer Kishore Kumar and composer R.D. Burman were amongst his closest friends.
In his four-decade career, he appeared in about 160 films, of which 106 had him as the solo lead hero and 22 were two hero projects.
Rajesh proved his mettle in offbeat films too. He teamed up with Hrishikesh Mukherjee for the critically acclaimed "Bawarchi" and "Namak Haram". The quintessential romantic also did the intense "Avishkar", directed by Basu Bhattacharya.
But then age caught up and the star began fading away.
He moved to television and played the main lead in two serials - "Ittefaque" and "Apne Paraye" during 2001-02 and also featured in "Raghukul Reet Sada Chali Aayi" between 2008-09.
The decline to B-grade films was inevitable. There was also the sorry "Wafa" with Laila Khan, who was found murdered this July.
He dabbled in politics, being Congress MP from the New Delhi constituency from 1991-1996.
Like the Hollywood legends of yore, the personal life also had a larger than life dimension.
He fell in love with Dimple Kapadia, who was only 16 and whose first film "Bobby" was yet to release. She was 15 years younger to him but the pull was strong and they got married after a whwhirwind romance in 1973.
It was the stuff of tabloid headlines. They had two daughters Twinkle and Rinke. The marriage lasted only 11 years.
It was a lonely life for Rajesh after that. He disappeared from the headlines and appeared to be a shadow of his former self in his rare public appearances.
But the family came together in his last days. His estranged wife was the one who took care of him during his illness. Son-in-law Akshay Kumar was also a great comfort.
Rajesh reappeared in an ad a few months before his death, and once again became the talk of town - he was clearly unwell but the zest in his voice was intact as he intoned "Babumoshai" from his much loved film "Anand".
Like Anand from the film, the man is gone. But the memories will live on.

In June 2012, it was reported that Rajesh Khanna's health had been deterorating for some time,[118][119] On 23 June he was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai due to health complications. He was discharged on 8 July from the hospital and was reportedly fine.[120][121][122][123]
Final words of Rajesh Khanna "Time up ho gaya....pack up!!" tweeted by Amitabh Bachchan after his death
On 14 July, Khanna was readmitted to the Lilavati Hospital but was discharged on 17 July.[124][125] He died the next day at his bungalow, Aashirwad, in Mumbai due to kidney problems.[126][127][128] Dr Trivedi, a spokesman for the hospital, said that he cannot confirm the nature of the illness. However, a friend who acted as his spokesman during the illness had said his food intake had decreased over the previous days and he was "very weak." His funeral took place on 19 July at 11:00.[129] He died in the presence of his wife Dimple Kapadia, daughters Rinkie Khanna and Twinkle Khanna, son-in-law Akshay Kumar, grand children and other close relatives.[130][131] His pyre was lit by his grandson, Aarav, with the assistance of Akshay Kumar.[132] [133]
Reactions
Following his death, there was a quick spate of reactions from within the Bollywood fraternity. Hema Malini said that "we always thought he would come back [from the hospital]. His name will be written in golden words." Madhuri Dixit wrote on Twitter that "as another of Hindi cinema's giants passes, Rajesh Khanna. Our sincere condolences to his family. We will miss him dearly." Vyjayanthimala commented that "his death is a big loss to the industry. It's my bad luck that I didn't have the chance to work with him because he came much later. I remember when he came to Chennai for some film shoot the college girls went crazy to catch a glimpse of him when he was going to his studio."[134] Manna Dey said: "He was a great actor, truly a superstar no doubt about it. I am honoured to have done playback for him. I have worked for him in several movies and actors like him are a rarity."[135] Mrinal Sen recollected how Khanna had wanted to cast him in one of his films, but the latter could not manage due to date problems. "We had met several times. Once I had wanted to cast him in one of my films but somehow that didn't work out due to his date problems." Buddhadeb Dasgupta said Khanna's acting would continue to inspire young actors in future. "He was a great actor and was the first superstar. He was a much bigger star than Amitabh Bachchan. He was a craze when we were in school and college. His acting will continue to inspire young actors of the coming generations."[136] Rituparno Ghosh said: "In the film Anand, Khanna delivered some of Indian cinema's most memorable dialogue. The use of the word babu moshai for Amitabh Bachchan, who played a Bengali doctor in the film, is so deeply etched in the minds of Indians that it has almost become a synonym for Bengalis for the rest of the countrymen. In a dhoti and kurta, you showed the rest of India how truly elegant Bengal was." Film historian S. M. M. Ausaja added: "He never acted in a Bengali cinema. But right from the late 1960s to the 70s he was the top star and worked with the top directors of his era, most of whom were Bengalis."[137] There were also reactions from the Gali Tiwaria where the his ancestral house was, and had since been converted to a temple through his donation. Songs from his movies were played as the news of his death became known. His foster brother Muni Chand Khanna said that "he used to love to play cricket when he lived here. He was a simple boy when he lived here and led a simple life even after achieving so much."[138] As were the residents of Burewala, Pakistan.[139]
Additionally, those within the political spectrum that offered their condolences included Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who said that he "convey[s] my heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and countless fans and admirers of Shri Rajesh Khanna." INC President Sonia Gandhi also expressed her sorrow. Regional political leaders who offered their condolences included Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee who said: "Rajesh Khanna was always a symbol of romance. His smiling face and the ability to connect with people at ease had made him popular. We lost a big pole star in the film world today;" as well as Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who added that "his death has caused irreparable loss to Hindi cinema."[129]
Condolences also came from Pakistan where Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf called Khanna a "great actor whose contribution to the field of films and arts would be long remembered. [He had a] large fan following across the borders and captivated audiences with his excellent acting skills." Ali Zafar wrote on Twitter: "Rajesh Khanna - RIP. So many fond memories from his movies and songs," while Syed Noor said: "Rajesh Khanna was such a huge actor of the subcontinent that he will be remembered by the people for many years to come. The era he reigned over is unlikely to be experienced by any other actor of this subcontinent." Geo TV also aired a nearly hour-long tribute with contributions from actors, filmmakers and musicians.
New Delhi: Rajesh Khanna, the man synonymous with the word superstar in Hindi cinema in the 1970s with immortals such as 'Anand', 'Kati Patang' and 'Aradhana', died at his Mumbai home Ashirwad on Wednesday after a long battle with kidney problems.
His demise brought back memories of the charmer, lover and hero that he was to his family, fans and well-wishers. For them, his magic will remain forever.
"He has gone to a nice and heavenly place, we are happy about that," Rajesh's son-in-law Akshay Kumar, married to his elder daughter Twinkle, said after his death around 10 am.
In his career spanning almost five decades, the actor featured in about 160 films, starting with 'Aakhri Khat' in 1966.
Between 'Aradhana' in 1969 and 'Prem Kahani' in 1975, he enjoyed god-like status. Women would line the road for a glimpse, chant his name, cover his car with lipstick marks and even write him letters in blood.
Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, who paired in a number of hits with Rajesh Khanna, said no other actor ever had a fan following like the superstar. "He was most certainly the first superstar and with due respect to other actors, nobody created that kind of a craze after him," Sharmila says.
Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar said she was saddened by Khanna's death. "Aaj humari filmi duniya ke bohot mashhoor kalakar rajesh khanna ji, humare bich nahi rahe, mujhe bohot dukh hai, main dimple ji, unki betiyaan aur daamad in sab ke dukh me shamil hun, ishwar rajesh khanna ji ki aatma ko shanti pradan kare (Film industry has lost a famous artist today in Rajesh
Khanna. I am deeply saddened by his death. I share the grief of Dimpleji, his daughters and his son-in-law and pray that his soul rests in peace)," Mangeshkar tweeted.
Overcome with emotions after Rajesh Khanna's death, yesteryear Bollywood star Mumtaz, who acted with him in many hits, said the actor was "very close" to her even though he came across as an introvert to others. Mumtaz said she was "crying the whole morning", but was happy that she had met the ailing Khanna - 'Kaka' to his fans - in Mumbai last month, when the two discussed their respective battles with cancer.
Music contributed immensely to Rajesh Khanna's stardom and the credit goes to his successful association with singer Kishore Kumar and composer RD Burman. The trio, which churned out evergreen hits like 'Kuch to log kahenge' and 'Ye shaam mastani', established the golden era of Hindi film music.
Many of the hit songs, in films such as "Aradhana", "Kati Patang" and "Amar Prem", were penned by Anand Bakshi.
The songs 'Roop tera mastana' and 'Mere sapno ki rani' from the film "Aradhana" saw Rajesh and Kishore come together for the first time. RD had to finish the film's sound track after his father, legendary composer SD Burman, fell ill.
The film also saw the resurgence of Kishore Kumar, who eventually became the official playback voice of Khanna and the actor-singer-composer trio delivered a number of hit songs subsequently.
Later films like "Kati Patang", "Amar Prem", "Apna Desh", "Aap Ki Kasam", "Namak Haraam", "Agar Tum Na Hote", "Awaaz", "Hum Dono" and "Alag Alag" saw Rajesh, RD and Kishore weave magic together.
'Yeh Kya Hua' and 'Chingari koi bhadke' from "Amar Prem" is an all time favourite despite it being a melancholy song. 'Yeh Shaam Mastani' from "Kati Patang", another masterpiece from the hit trio, let Rajesh display his charismatic charm.
'Jai Jai Shiv Shankar' from "Aap Ki Kasam" was full of oodles of fun, while 'O Mere Dil Ke Chain' from "Mere Jeevan Saathi" is probably one of the most romantic songs of all time. 'Yeh Jo Mohobbat Hai' from "Kati Patang" is another heart-touching number delivered by the trio of Rajesh, Kishore and RD.
Born as Jatin Khanna on December 29, 1942, Khanna was adopted and raised by foster parents. He began taking interest in acting while in school and performed in a number of plays. It was his uncle who changed Khanna's first name to Rajesh.
A pall of gloom descended on the film industry with Khanna's death with artists calling it the end of an era in Bollywood.
Saira Banu, who missed a chance of working with Khanna during his stardom days, said the actor was very humble. "I was supposed to work with him in 'Choti Bahu' but I could not because I was ill. I shot with him for two days and found that he was very charming, humble and a shy person. May his soul rest in peace," Banu said.
His contemporary Manoj Kumar was planning to meet Khanna. "I had called Dimple but she told me not to come as Rajesh Khanna was not in a position to talk...I miss him a lot and I have shared some of the best memories with him."
Veteran actress Vyjayanthimala said, "His death is a big loss to the industry. It's my bad luck that I didn't have the chance to work with him because he came much later. I remember when he came to Chennai for some film shoot the college girls went crazy to catch a glimpse of him when he was going to his studio."
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan said Khanna's smile will be missed forever. "To live with intention and walk to the edge. Play with abandon, choose with no regret. Smile and made us do the same. Sir, you defined our era. Whenever life felt tough u made us feel how love could change it all. RIP," SRK tweeted.
Rajesh Khanna epitomised a range of emotions on the big screen--from melancholy to romance-with a rich bouquet of lilting songs like 'Zindagi ek safar hai suhana' and 'Mere sapno ki raani' making his movies and characters immortal.
Bollywood's first superstar, the 69-year-old actor's mannerism, his unique style of dancing, dialogue delivery, disarming smile and the signature nod of his head added to his onscreen persona that made many a young woman's heart skip a beat.
Despite his heartthrob status as a romantic hero, Khanna essayed a variety of roles--the terminally ill Anand in the Hrishikesh Mukherjee film, a romantic airforce officer in "Aradhana", a chef in "Bawarchi", a lonely husband in "Amar Prem" and a poor medical student in "Safar".
Khanna also had a brush with politics after he stopped acting from early nineties. He won the Lok Sabha seat from New Delhi constituency in the 1991 elections.

Rajesh, Bollywood's first superstar and perhaps the only one to have reached those dazzling heights of fame, died at his home Ashirwad after a long battle with suspected liver problems.
His demise brought back memories of the charmer, lover and hero that he was to his family, fans and well-wishers. For them, his magic will remain forever.
"He has gone to a nice and heavenly place, we are happy about that," Rajesh's son-in-law Akshay Kumar, married to his elder daughter Twinkle, said after his death around 10 a.m.
When news of his critical health first came out on June 20, legion of his fans expressed concern. A day later, he stepped out in the company of Akshay Kumar and estranged wife Dimple Kapadia to tell his fans that all is well.
But clearly it wasn't.
He was a shadow of himself, gaunt and ravaged by illness, with glares covering the famous face that would once reduce women to a swoon.
On June 23, Kaka - as he was popularly known in the film world - was in the hospital, and the stay stretched for 15 days. Just a week after he was discharged, he was back to the hospital bed due to "weakness", but was allowed to go home soon after.
Though family members maintained he was "fine", Rajesh was said to be critical Wednesday morning and breathed his last at his Bandra home.
His family - estranged wife Dimple Kapadia and daughters Twinkle and Rinke - were by his side during his last moments, those close to the family said.

Thousands of his fans and industry members are expected to turn up for the funeral, scheduled at 11.30 a.m. Thursday.
Rajesh's death has brought the curtains down on an era in Hindi cinema - an era he defined with his prowess in romantic and emotional roles, an art that has inspired and continues to inspire several young actors and his legion of fans.
Summarising the phenomenon that Rajesh Khanna was, Anupam Kher said that "he gave us a crash course in romance. He introduced us to a special twinkle in the eyes that made us feel good about ourselves. Rajesh Khanna taught us how to smile. He added dignity to our concept of romance."
In his career spanning almost five decades, the actor featured in about 160 films, starting with "Aakhri Khat" in 1966.

As the crowd swelled, Khanna's son-in-law Akshay Kumar came out of the house about half-an-hour after the news broke, and arrangements were made for chairs for visitors inside the house, to make an official announcement about the death. "My father-in-law Rajesh Khanna is no more with us," he said.
Rajesh Khanna had been in and out of hospital at least three times in the past few months, often complaining of weakness and exhaustion. He was discharged from hospital only this Monday. Sources say the family was told to take the actor home and he too wanted to go back.
One of his fans who has been visiting the hospital and residence ever since the actor was taken ill recalls: "We used to stand outside the house to get a glimpse of him but he rarely came out. We would get lucky if he decided to come out on the balcony. He was not like today's actors, who have special darshans. He was a true superstar."
Rishi Kapoor was the first to arrive at Aashirward followed by a host of other celebrities, including Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, Imran Khan, Jeetendra, Abhishek Bachchan and Yash Chopra. Some politicians, including chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, came to pay condolences to the family.

”Babumoshai,” he intoned deeply - the affectionate Bengali address he made all his own after “Anand”.
That voice has been silenced.

Michael Joseph Jackson[1] (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American recording artist, entertainer, and businessman. Often referred to as the King of Pop, or by his initials MJ,[2] Jackson is recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time by Guinness World Records. His contribution to music, dance, and fashion, along with a much-publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades. The seventh child of the Jackson family, he debuted on the professional music scene along with his brothers as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1964, and began his solo career in 1971.
In the early 1980s, Jackson became a dominant figure in popular music. The music videos for his songs, including those of "Beat It", "Billie Jean", and "Thriller", were credited with transforming the medium into an art form and a promotional tool, and the popularity of these videos helped to bring the relatively new television channel MTV to fame. With videos such as "Black or White" and "Scream" he continued to be highly visible on MTV in the 1990s, and also began to forge a reputation as a touring artist. Through stage performances and music videos, Jackson popularized a number of complicated dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk, to which he gave the name. His distinctive musical sound and vocal style influenced numerous hip hop, post-disco, contemporary R&B, pop and rock artists.
Jackson's 1982 album Thriller is the best-selling album of all time. His other records, including Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995), also rank among the world's best-selling. Jackson is one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. He was also inducted into the Dance Hall of Fame as the first (and currently only) dancer from the world of pop and rock 'n' roll. Some of his other achievements include multiple Guinness World Records; 13 Grammy Awards (as well as the Grammy Legend Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award); 26 American Music Awards (more than any other artist, including the "Artist of the Century" and "Artist of the '80s"); 13 number-one singles in the United States in his solo career (more than any other male artist in the Hot 100 era); and the estimated sale of over 750 million records worldwide. Jackson won hundreds of awards, which made him the most-awarded recording artist in the history of popular music.[3] He was also one of the world's most prominent humanitarians and philanthropists; personally, and through his Heal the World Foundation, he donated more than $300 million in charity, and holds the Guinness World Record for having supported the most charities out of any pop star.

In February 2005, Martin Bashir aired his second hit-piece on Michael Jackson, titled “Michael Jackson’s Secret World”. If there were any thoughts that Bashir was remorseful for what he did to MJ with his first hit-piece, then this documentary will totally destroy those notions, as this solidifies Bashir’s utter contempt for MJ. And the timing of this piece of garbage is no coincidence either; it aired right before jury selection, so it was obviously designed to taint the jury pool.
This documentary was essentially swept under the rug by ABC News, as it is not for sale on their website, despite the fact that hundreds of past episodes of 20/20 and Primetime Live are for sale on their website.
Without further ado, here is the transcript and analysis of Bashir’s second takedown of MJ. Please note that for the sake of clarity, I used the word “narrating” to distinguish between Bashir’s narration, and the taped interviews that were taken from the British Documentary that Bashir piggybacked on. Those clips are in block quotes.
Transcript of Michael Jackson’s Secret World
Disclaimer: In addition to our own reporting, this program contains excerpts from a documentary made by a British production company, which aired in the U.K. three weeks ago. Some of the individuals who appeared in that documentary received compensation for their participation. No payment was made for any of the interviews conducted by Martin Bashir or ABC News.
Introduction: Tonight, it started with his own words. Words that made the world take notice, really take notice. “Why can’t you share your bed?” Was it an innocent, loving friendship? Or something much darker? As the trial of the century gears up, Martin Bashir returns to the secret world of Michael Jackson, exploring his pattern of unusual friendships with much younger boys that began more than 20 years ago. You’ll hear from his detractors, and his friends. You’ll hear from boys who’ll say that nothing improper ever happened between them, and boys now grown up who say something did. Plus, the child starts Jackson befriended, and the boy behind a reported $25 million dollar payoff. Now, a new look at Neverland, with the man whose documentary ignited a firestorm, a 2-hour special that picks up where “Living With Michael Jackson” left off 2 years ago, as Martin Bashir takes a closer look at Michael Jackson’s Secret World.
Martin Bashir (narrating): Over 2 years ago, I started making a documentary about Michael Jackson. I saw some extraordinary things. We went shopping. We raced go-carts. I met his children, and his baby. And then, I went back to Neverland. What happened over the next few hours would forever change the lives of everyone who was there. I could never have foreseen what consequences that encounter would have. The young boy I interviewed that day would later allege that Michael Jackson abused him. I had to ask myself “Could his allegations of what happened after that day be true?” So I went back to the beginning. I was about to enter the secret world of Michael Jackson. Once again, this would be a journey into the surprising, the unusual, and the bizarre. It’s a world where Michael Jackson has shared his wealth, his home, and sometimes even his bedroom, with much younger boys. Were these relationships innocent, as Jackson and many of the boys say, or were some of them criminal, as at least 2 boys have alleged. It began when he was little more than a boy himself.
LaToya Jackson (clip from British documentary): I really didn’t have, and I know that everyone knows this, but he really didn’t have much of a childhood.
Martin Bashir (narrating): Michael says his childhood was scarred by the pressures of early stardom, and the close intentions of violent father, Joe.
LaToya Jackson (clip from British documentary): He was a disciplinarian, and when I say disciplinarian what I mean is if he felt you did something wrong, then of course he would spank you.
Martin Bashir (narrating): When I interviewed Michael Jackson, he told me that his father had made his life desperately unhappy.
Clip from “Living With Michael Jackson”:
Martin Bashir: How often would he beat you?
Michael Jackson: Too much.
Martin Bashir: Would he only use a belt?
Michael Jackson: (Crying.) Why do you do this to me? No, more than a belt. When he would catch me, oh my God, it was bad.
LaToya Jackson (clip from documentary): He was strict. It was like “Why do we always have to do this? Why can’t we do that?” But that’s part of growing up.
Martin Bashir (narrating): According to Jackson, he didn’t want to grow up. He craved the childhood he never had. Michael Jackson was reluctant to join the adult world. When I asked Jackson about dating Tatum O’Neil, he told me that at the time, the idea of sex had terrified him.
Clip from “Living With Michael Jackson”
Michael Jackson: She told me to go and lie on the bed, and I did, and she slowly walked over, and she touched the button on my shirt to open it, and I put my hands like this (covers his face with both hands), and I wouldn’t let them down, and she just walked away. She knew I was too shy for it. That’s what happened.
Martin Bashir: Did you not feel tempted at all?
Michael Jackson: No.
Martin Bashir: You just felt frightened?
Michael Jackson: I was frightened. I was afraid.
Martin Bashir (narrating): In Tatum O’Neal’s recent book, she denies trying to seduce Jackson. Whatever his experience with girls, he would soon begin friendships with boys much younger than himself. Jackson’s sister says that all of these relationships were entirely innocent.
LaToya Jackson (clip from British documentary): He’s always had lots of friends, all ages. And then he had younger kids that were friends, but you have to remember that Michael was so loved by everyone in the world, which he still is, that everybody wanted to be around him.
J. Randy Taraborrelli (clip from British documentary): He feels very strongly that he missed out on his childhood, and one of the ways he feels that he can recapture his youth is by associating with young kids.
Martin Bashir (narrating): Terry George claims he was one of those boys.
Terry George (clip from British documentary): When I was the age of 13, I was a little bit cheeky, and I think I was a little bit naïve, looking back.
Martin Bashir (narrating): Terry George says he was 13, and a keen collector of celebrity interviews, when he met Michael in Leeds, in the north of England. For the rest of the Jacksons, it was just another stop on their 1979 European tour. But for Michael, says Terry George, it was a chance to make a new friend.
Maureen Orth (clip from British documentary): Michael would tour all over the world, and there were little boys everywhere that would come to the hotels.
Terry George (clip from British documentary): I didn’t really mingle with other people. I didn’t have a lot of friends then.
Martin Bashir (narrating): Determined to interview his idol, Terry says he found out where the Jacksons were staying. Then, armed with Michael’s hotel room number and a tape recorder, he simply knocked on his door.
Terry George (clip from British documentary): Michael said “Who is it?”, and I said “Hi, my name’s Terry George, I’ve come to do an interview. He opened the door, and he looked a bit shocked to see me. He was looking at this level, and I was down here somewhere.
Martin Bashir (narrating): Terry George says that at the end of the interview, he and Michael Jackson swapped phone numbers.
Terry George (clip from British documentary): He giving me his number, and asking for mine didn’t really feel strange at all, it was great, it was a thrill. I was happy to be in touch with a celebrity.
Martin Bashir (narrating): After the tour left Britain, Terry George says that Michael Jackson started calling 2 or 3 times a week, and they had friendly conversations about their lives.
Terry George (clip from British documentary): His calls came quite late at night, normally from 11 in the evening to right through to 5 o’clock in the morning on some occasions.
Martin Bashir (narrating): And then he says one night, Michael made a call that Terry has never forgotten.
Terry George (clip from British documentary): “I Had Phone Sex With Jacko!” is what the press wrote.
Martin Bashir (narrating): I met with Terry George to hear his account of what really happened that night.
Terry George (speaking to Bashir directly): He spoke about masturbation, about him masturbating, and did I masturbate. I never saw it coming. It wasn’t something I expected. It just came out the blue, really. He said “Would you believe that I’m doing it now?” And he let me hear it on the telephone, and I could hear it.
Martin Bashir: And what did you think he meant by that?
Terry George: I knew what he meant by that, because he was talking about masturbation. I did feel uncomfortable, I can remember feeling uncomfortable. I felt awkward.
Martin Bashir: What are your thoughts when you put the phone down?
Terry George: I thought that I didn’t react the way he wanted me to react, and I thought that perhaps he would never call me again, or that I would never hear from him again. In hindsight, looking back at it now, I know that
the conversation probably should never have happened, it probably wasn’t natural.
Martin Bashir (narrating): Terry George says there were no more sexual conversations. In time, the two lost touch. Terry George’s friendship with Michael Jackson was over. A source close to the Jackson camp says that “Terry George’s story isn’t true. In the past, he has sold his story to the press. All of this is an old, unsubstantiated accusation.” Some people who have investigated Michael Jackson say that he ultimately rejects many of his young friends.
Diane Dimond (clip from British documentary): Michael Jackson changes his phone numbers, he’s not available on the telephone anymore.
Maureen Orth (clip from British documentary): As soon as they appear to be a little bit more into puberty, and they have gotten their first facial hair…………
Diane Dimond (clip from British documentary): ………he just moves on to the next little “special friend”.
Martin Bashir (narrating): But soon, Michael would want to take one of his friends out, before America’s press, on a double date with one of the world’s most beautiful women. For the superstar who calls himself “Peter Pan”, the transition from child sensation to adult pop idol wasn’t easy.
Latoya Jackson (clip from British documentary): He went through this phase in his life when he became extremely shy, and totally changed. It totally changed his demeanor. He didn’t want to see people, he just became a totally different person.
Martin Bashir (narrating): Michael Jackson told me about this difficult period in his life.
(Clip from “Living With Michael Jackson”)
Michael Jackson: One cousin would always want to pop my pimples. I would just go to the bedroom and cry, you know?
Martin Bashir: Is it true that your father used to say you had a fat nose?
Michael Jackson: Yeah.
Martin Bashir: What did he say? What did he actually say?
Michael Jackson: “God your nose is big! You didn’t get it from me!”
Martin Bashir: What does that do to someone who’s going through adolescence?
Michael Jackson: You want to die. You want to die. And on top of it you have to go on stage in a spotlight, in front of hundreds of thousands of people. It’s hard! I would have been happier wearing a mask!
Martin Bashir (narrating): At 21, Jackson was about to become a fully-fledged superstar. But a friendship with a boy was about to startle the world. This video for “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough” helped launch Michael’s solo career. He looks like a man who’s breaking free.
J. Randy Tarroberrelli (clip from British documentary): When you watch Michael, you’d like to think that he was enjoying it to. In fact, it was one of the darkest times in Michael Jackson’s life.
Martin Bashir (narrating): In the midst of Jackson’s private pain, Jackson was in public demand, and music’s brightest new star was about to go on a date with Brooke Shields, America’s most desirable young woman. But in his private life, Michael’s new best friend was the tiny child star Emmanuelle Lewis.
Emmanuelle Lewis (clip from British documentary): Regardless of how old we are in real life, we’re just not going to get older. That was just a friend of mine. We were Peter Pan.
Martin Bashir (narrating): The 3-foot start was invited down to the set of Jackson’s new video “Thriller”, and met Michael while he was having his makeup done.
Emmanuelle Lewis (clip from British documentary): He was like “Are you afraid of me?” Of course not! You’re Michael Jackson!
Martin Bashir (narrating): But according to Jackson’s biographer, some members of the Jackson family were becoming concerned with how the world would view this friendship.
J. Randy Taraborrelli (clip from British documentary): The two of them are rolling around on the grass, and playing games with each other.
LaToya Jackson (clip from British documentary): They would do all of the “Thriller” moves together, and it was so cute, so adorable. And no, there were no questions about it because it was a wonderful friendship.
Martin Bashir (narrating): By 1984, Michael’s second album “Thriller” was well on its way to being the best seller of all time. He was nominated for 12 Grammy Awards, and was all set to be crowned the King of Pop. But choosing a date for the ceremony, Jackson faced a dilemma: Whom to take?
LaToya Jackson (clip from British documentary): I recall Brooke being over to the house and asking Michael if she could go with him to the awards.
J. Randy Taraborrelli (clip from British documentary): Michael was a little bit lukewarm on that, but he liked her, but he liked Emmanuelle better.
LaToya Jackson (clip from British documentary): He didn’t want to say “No”. So he had 2 dates!
Martin Bashir (narrating): But here, in a scene from Fox Broadcasting’s “Michael Jackson’s Home Movies”, just before he swept the ball at the Grammy’s, he’s seen arriving at the ceremony with Brooke on one arm, and Emmanuelle on the other.
Emmanuelle Lewis (clip from British documentary): I didn’t know the magnitude of how great this moment was going to be in history, you know? You just didn’t know.
Martin Bashir (narrating): The extraordinary spectacle was seen around the world.
Diane Dimond (clip from British documentary): You can imagine the surprise, and shock, that everybody felt that Michael Jackson and Brooke Shields were a couple, with Emmanuelle Lewis?!!
J. Randy Taraborrelli (clip from British documentary): He basically had Brooke Shields there as his date, but he had Emmanuelle sort of in his arms.
Martin Bashir (narrating): One look at this threesome, and some people wondered about Jackson’s relationships. People wanted to know why Michael Jackson was hanging around with a boy less than half his age, but to Emmanuelle Lewis, this was just an innocent friendship.
Emmanuelle Lewis (clip from British documentary): All we did was watch comedy and cartoons. Could anything negative happen between the two of us? The answer to that question is hell no!!
Diane Dimond (clip from British documentary): When Emmanuelle Lewis started showing up in public with Michael Jackson, that was as if the water had burst over the damn. After that, the pattern began that we always saw Michael with a young male boy at his side. Almost always.
Martin Bashir (narrating): Life was about to get stranger in Michael Jackson’s secret world. Michael Jackson was now a megastar, attracting plaudits from presidents. His relationships with boys was becoming just one more eccentricity from a man who was becoming famous for being odd.
Diane Dimond (clip from British documentary): There’s always been so many eccentric things going on around Michael Jackson that what was lost in the background were these little boys, who were always there.
Martin Bashir (narrating): What people didn’t know is that Jackson had been splashing cash on extravagant gifts for his new young friend, and his family. One of the first boys to benefit from Jackson’s new found wealth was the son of a California garbage man, 10-year old Jimmy Safechuck. The young actor was picked by Jackson to star in this glossy commercial. Designed specifically to appeal to kids, in which Michael’s image became indelibly linked to children, and Jimmy appeared as his clone.
J. Randy Taraborrelli (clip from British documentary): Now the interesting thing about Jimmy Safechuck is that he was actually the first “mini-Michael”.
Martin Bashir (narrating): Michael was so enchanted by his new “mini-Michael”, he took Jimmy on the road to tour with his next album “Bad”. The boy and Jackson even dressed in identical outfits.
Diane Dimond (clip from British documentary): I don’t know whose idea it was to start dressing these boys like Michael.
Martin Bashir (narrating): Looking like Michael became part of the pattern for Jackson’s young friends. \
J. Randy Taraborrelli (clip from British documentary): You know, the glove, the spin……….
Diane Dimond (clip from British documentary): ………the little coats, the fedora hats……….
J. Randy Taraborrelli (clip from British documentary): ………..the pants that were too short, and the sequin socks………
Diane Dimond (clip from British documentary): ……..it starts to make you wonder “Who’s making them dress that way? Do they want to dress that way, or does Michael insist that they dress that way?
Martin Bashir (narrating): One of the dancers who toured with Jackson says that the family didn’t approve when Jackson reportedly took Jimmy and his family on a shopping spree.
Tatiana Thumbtzen (clip from British documentary): The whole family, even Joseph, they didn’t like it. They didn’t think it was right.
Diane Dimond (clip from British documentary):The family was aghast. You’d by them a little outfit to wear. You’d take them on a trip, that’s fine. But you buy them a house? You buy them 2 luxury automobiles?
LaToya Jackson (clip from British documentary): When you put enough out there, it looks a certain way. However, at the same time, when you are innocent, you don’t think anything of it. It’s just a gift. It’s like “Enjoy it, have fun”.
Diane Dimond (clip from British documentary): I saw the Safechuck’s lifestyle change. I read their credit report. I saw what they did for a living before Michael Jackson came into their life. And then I saw the way they were living afterward, and it wasn’t just this child appearing in one video with Michael Jackson that gave him all that money.
Martin Bashir (narrating): Dimond says there might have been another explanation, such as a business loan. Jimmy Safechuck has not alleged any wrongdoing by Jackson. Supporters of Jackson say that his extravagance to some of these boys just reflects his widespread generosity.
J. Randy Taraborrelli (clip from British documentary): I know Michael Jackson, and I know how he is with people, and how he is with families of people who come into his life. He’s been generous to a fault.
Martin Bashir (narrating): But just like previous boys in Michael’s life, Jimmy Safechuck’s days as a Michael favorite were numbered. With his family, he went to visit his old friend Michael, but two former Michael Jackson employees say the star didn’t even turn up.

The Jackson 5. Michael Jackson went on to become one of the most internationally famous award-winning solo pop sensations to date. His 2009 death stirred controversy and was ultimately ruled an accidental overdose.
Early Life
Jackson was born August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana, to an African-American working-class family. His father, Joseph Jackson, had been a guitarist but had put aside his musical aspirations to provide for his family as a crane operator. Believing his sons had talent, he molded them into a musical group in the early 1960s. At first, the Jackson Family performers consisted of Michael's older brothers Tito, Jermaine, and Jackie. Michael joined his siblings when he was five, and emerged as the group's lead vocalist. He showed remarkable range and depth for such a young performer, impressing audiences with his ability to convey complex emotions. Older brother Marlon also became a member of the group, which evolved into the The Jackson 5.
Behind the scenes, Joseph Jackson pushed his sons to succeed. He was also reportedly known to become violent with them. Michael and his brothers spent endless hours rehearsing and polishing up their act. At first, the Jackson 5 played local gigs and built a strong following. They recorded one single on their own, "Big Boy" with the b-side "You've Changed," but it failed to generate much interest.
The Jackson 5 moved on to working an opening act for such R&B artists as Gladys Knight and the Pips, James Brown, and Sam and Dave. Many of these performers were signed to the legendary Motown record label, and it has been reported that Gladys Knight may have been the one to tell Motown founder Berry Gordy about the Jackson 5. Impressed by the group, Gordy signed them to his label in 1968.
Relocating to Los Angeles, Michael and his brothers started work on their music and dancing with their father as their manager. They lived with Gordy and also with Supremes singer Diana Ross when they first arrived there. In August 1969, the Jackson 5 was introduced to the music industry at a special event, and later served as the opening act for the Supremes. Their first album, Diana Ross Presents the Jackson 5, hit the charts in December of that year. It's first single, "I Want You Back," hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1970.
